Open Water
Chapter 2: Maggot

"Listen and stand straight Maggots." The Sergeant commanded. "Today is a new and special day for a group of rookies like yourselves." He paused, as if to think of what to say next. "Most of you Pukes are ready to move up in rank. Others," He stopped again to look for the usual trouble-makers. "Such as Rookie Hoff who doesn't even bother to show are not."

I glanced around the room, and sure enough Seth Hoff was nowhere to be found. My two best pals were standing by either side of me.

On the left was Lyle Meer. A short, wide-eyed, dirty-blonde, ten year-old boy with buck teeth. He stood grinning, his smile reaching from ear to ear. On my right was Matteo Fluch. A lanky, nonchalant, mousy brunet, thirteen year-old boy with sword skills that could take down the Gods if he wanted to. These two guys have been by my side ever since I joined.

"Only five of you maggots are being bumped up, the rest will stay rookies until they prove themselves.  Most likely friendships will be split and torn, rivalries be made, and character will build." The Sergeant paused to take out a scroll from his satchel. "You see this, Maggots? This is the list of who goes on."

There were twelve of us, seven would stay and be joined by the new recruits. I did not care if I stayed or went, I just hoped that Lyle, Matt, and I would be able to stay together.

"Those five of you are: Enzo Halten, Finn Welle, Nolan Narbe, Vincent Reflektieren, and Dem Frei."

My heart plummeted; this was the worst case scenario. Lyle's face fell and he let out a small, "What...?"

Matteo's normal slight scowl deepened. With a roll of his deep blue eyes, he turned away and muttered, "...You've got to be kidding me...They let that reject move up..? "

Something inside me broke when I heard Matteo's words. He was my friend; a pal, a bud, and even like an older brother to me. Why did he say such harsh things? Had he hated my guts all along? Was it not bad enough that I was bumped up alone? I felt like such a maggot right then. An inferior pest only to be stepped on. That is all I was to Matteo Fluch. A maggot.
Okay, this is chapter 2 of my original story Open Water. Please R&R. >:]
